In the Community, there is no more pain or war. Implanted computer chips have wiped humanity clean of destructive emotions, and thoughts are replaced by a feed from the Link network.

When Zoe starts to malfunction (or “glitch”), she suddenly begins having her own thoughts, feelings, and identity. Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.

As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Both boys introduce Zoe to feelings that are entirely new. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse.

In this action-packed debut, Glitch begins an exciting new young adult trilogy.

Kayla: Could you tell us about yourself and your debut novel "Glitch"?

Heather: I grew up in Texas but recently moved to Minneapolis, MN. I spend most of my days either on my couch or out in a coffeeshop writing. Glitch tells the story of Zoe, a cybernetically-enhanced teenager living in an underground society. She slowly realizes her body is changing when her internal hardware begins to malfunction. She’s developing powerful telekinesis and even though getting caught could mean reprogramming, or worse, deactivation, Zoe begins to seek out other glitchers in her society.

Kayla: Why Young Adult?

Heather: I've loved reading YA for a long time now. As a writer, I'm fascinated with the teenage years because they are so ripe with all kinds of transition and moments of discovery. In Glitch, some of the larger themes of waking up from life as a drone and beginning to experience emotion for the first time are reminiscent of the teenage experience. Suddenly everything seems brighter and more intense and you get to start deciding what kind of person you want to be in the world. Also, let's face it, YA books get the best covers ;)

Kayla: What makes Glitch different from other Sci-Fi novels?

Heather: There's a lot of fun genre-bending elements in Glitch. While it's definitely sci-fi, I was also intentionally drawing from superhero stories. And of course there's a hefty dose of romance too.

Kayla: Where did you idea for "Glitch" come from?

Heather: The idea first started when my husband mentioned a Popular Science article he'd just read about research being done to investigate the possibility of putting the equivalent of a memory chip in Alzheimer's patients. The idea latched on and I couldn't stop envisioning the ways we might begin to incorporate technology into our very bodies in the future. And then, in true dystopian form, I started thinking about the way those in power might use such technology to subdue and control people.

Kayla: Are you currently working on any other projects?

Heather: Glitch is the first in a trilogy, so I've been hard at work on the next two books!

Kayla: Is there a certain book that has had a major impact on you?

Heather: If so, what is it? A book that really blew my world open was East of Eden by John Steinbeck. The book is about a lot of things, but I loved the lyricism of the language, the powerful cyclical storytelling, and the very deep truths about life the author plumbed.

Kayla: How have your interactions with Bloggers been?

Heather: Another thing I love about the YA community is all the passionate book bloggers! I've had great interactions with bloggers, and I'm so excited that people have been reading and reviewing the advanced reader copies.

Kayla: How excited are you to have your debut novel release right around the corner!?

Heather: It seems crazy and surreal. I'm not sure I'll really believe it until I see my book on the shelves, and maybe not even then!

Kayla: Is there anything else you would like to tell everyone?

Heather: Just that Glitch releases on August 7th and the other sequels will be releasing every six months, so there won't be long to wait before you can read the continuation of Zoe's journey!

So you did you know that the cover has already been made for the second book in this series?? YEAH, I KNOW RIGHT! Well I just HAVE to show it to you because it’s so beautiful. Not to mention the fact that I am super excited about it releasing early next year. Here it is:

Zoe is free. She has escaped the enslavement of the Community, disconnected from the hardware that had controlled her every thought and emotion, and evaded capture by the Chancellor intent on killing her. She is finally free, but she is far from safe.

Zoe and Adrien hide themselves from detection at the Foundation, an academy that trains teen glitchers to fight in the Resistance movement. Together, Zoe and her new team of superhuman fighters must risk their lives to rescue other glitchers and humans from the Chancellor's control. Challenges abound at every turn, and Adrien, who has become silent, distant, and tormented by his visions of the future, only adds to the growing certainty of defeat. But worst of all, as Zoe's team fights against impossible odds, distrust and betrayal leads to the terrible discovery that their greatest threat could already be lurking behind the safe walls of the Foundation.
