Vampires: Awesome Reflections of Ourselves

The myth of the vampire was born to the mainstream culture in 1897 when Bram Stoker introduced Dracula to the world. Dracula was a brooding vampire that enticed the ladies and then feverishly fed off of their blood. So why after over 100 years is the vampire myth more popular than ever? It’s simple: vampires’ are grandiose visions of our human self.

Living Forever: One thing about humans that is prevalent in day to day life is the hope to slow down the aging process. Everyone knows there is no way to live forever but people (especially) women are constantly looking for the next best product to keep them looking younger. People are intrigued by the idea of living forever and all the amazing things they would get to do. They love the idea of having years and years of time to learn new skills and trying new foods. How amazing would that be? The cherry on the cake would be the ability to do all this while remaining young and beautiful. Even the most modest person would enjoy that.

Doing the impossible: Another appeal of the vampire genre is that vampires get to do the impossible. In many vampire novels they have incredible strength and speed. Vampires can appear in a new place at the blink of an eye. They always win a fight and can move items no matter the weight. In popular books like Interview With a Vampire and Twilight vampires even have magic powers like mind reading or being able to see the future. People make fun conversation about the super powers they dreamed of having. What if those dreams were attainable? Whose mind would you like to read and would you enjoy seeing the future? If the answer is yes, this might be one of many reasons you love the vampire genre.

Romance is alive and kicking: I’m not a big romance buff myself and while my books don’t drown in romance, It is still a big part of the vampire genre. Book series such as the Black Dagger Brotherhood and Sookie Stackhouse prove that people still love the idea of forbidden love. If it isn’t forbidden love going on in the book, there’s romance between the vampires. We all know how hot that can get!

These ideas of why the vampire genre is still so popular don’t appear in every vampire novel. However, they do appear in most of the popular vampire genres today. As long as humans are fascinated with beautiful, immortal blood drinkers, vampires will be around for years to come!
