Bitten by the Writing Bug
In a lot of ways, For Ever is a coming of age story. My MC Wren Sullivan feels like her life got hijacked by her parents’ divorce. Making her life more complicated is the fact that she can read people’s minds just by looking into their eyes. So, when she moves to Portland, Oregon, with her mom, she’s just looking to survive the rest of her junior year. Then she meets some new friends and things are looking up until her second day when she catches eyes with a stranger, and the next thing she knows, she wakes up in the hospital. Whoever it was she saw doesn’t return to school, and the coincidence makes her kind of obsessive until this guy—Ever Casey—suddenly comes back to school and he’s really hot, and strange, and she can’t read his mind. Cue the drama and chaos!

I started writing For Ever after I had finished writing another young adult novel and sent it out to agents with no success. I had written on and off for years, but never very consistently. Then, I just caught a writing bug, and after I finished that first book, it was like, Yes! I was having so much fun that I didn’t want to stop. I started For Ever as a short character study—and it just took off from there. Once I finished it and went over it a million times, I decided to put it out there no matter what, and it was really easy to publish on Amazon.
I still feel like a newbie, but I guess my advice to aspiring authors would be: don’t get discouraged. Whenever I get upset over the little things, my husband always asks me, “Why do you write?” That’s when I remember I write because I love it. Also, and I know this sounds strange, but don’t listen to other people. I learned really early on that not everybody is going to love everything I do, but if I stop doing it because one person doesn’t like it, that’s sad. Keep going!
